I think in some organisations, there's a tendency for employees who have been with a company for many years, to inevitably be promoted to manager. However unfortunately they're not always manager material. Perhaps to develop more effective managers, we need to spend more time initially assessing who we promote to manager.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right - clearly not everyone is cut out to be a manager, and promoting these people into a manager’s role creates grief for them and their staff. There is no doubt that initial assessment of applicants for managerial positions will improve the success rate of those appointed. However, of greater concern are those who do have what it takes to be a good manager, but fail because they are never given the necessary skills. A comprehensive approach to selecting and appointing managers should include initial assessment, initial training, regular performance management as well as ongoing career development activities.
